How to Repair a Hose (video)

Eventually, any consumer hose on the market will spring a leak. But don't get hasty and throw that hose away just yet. A simple, inexpensive repair may be all that's needed to put it back in tip-top shape and in perfect working order.

For tiny holes and cracks, you can purchase hose repair tape that is designed specifically for garden hoses. In case of emergency, you can also use common electrical tape. Always be sure that before applying the tapte, the hose is clean and completely dry. To fix, simply wrap the tape while overlapping at the same time.. Watch that you do not wrap it too tightly or the hose will crease and the tape will fail to seal properly.

How to Fix a Leak at the Spigot

To fix a leak at the hose spigot, use a washer replacement. This is the simplest of all repairs and is often all that's needed. Over time washers will tend to dry out and deteriorate with age. Try replacing the old washer with a new one. If you find that the spigot still leaks, you'll probably have to replace the coupling.

You may find that your hose leak is on the end of in the middle and is larger than you thought. All is not lost yet. To repair this type of hose leak, you will first need to cut away the damaged then replace it with a new part that clamps or crimps on.

Be sure you make straight cuts with a sharp blade. Its a good idea to take the part you removed with you when purchasing the replacement. Repair part designs differ by manufacturer. There is nothing worse than getting to the hardware store and not knowing the exact diameter of the hose or the specifics of the part to be replaced. Also make sure that the part you select is the correct one for your hose material, whether rubber or vinyl.

Here is a tip for making those fittings go on easier: Be sure that it is clean and dry, then rub a little soap on the area you're repairing. The soap will make it more pliable and easier to work with.
